If you’ve never had green fingers, start here. Snake plant, pothos and aloe vera are the trio most often recommended for beginners: they cope with neglect, low light and erratic watering better than almost any other houseplant.
The snake plant barely needs water (every 15-20 days in summer, once a month in winter) and survives in low light. Pothos trails or climbs, tolerates shade and only asks that the soil feels dry before you water again. Aloe vera, for its part, stores water in its own leaves, so its worst enemy isn’t neglect, it’s overwatering.
| Plant | Water | Light | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snake plant | Every 15-20 days | Low light, tolerates shade | Very easy |
| Pothos | When the soil feels dry | Shade to indirect light | Very easy |
| Aloe vera | Every 2-3 weeks | Direct or very bright light | Easy |
A note if you have a cat or a dog: pothos and aloe are toxic if they chew them. Nothing serious in a home without pets. With a dog, putting them up high is enough; with a cat, not so much, because cats climb wherever they like — we cover it in cat-safe houseplants.
Start today: pick one of the three. Whichever you like the look of most — that’s all the criteria you need.
